The awards

What are the Magna Carta Awards?

They are awards that stand for COOPERATION, for building bridges between cultures and people. They were created to recognise the efforts of individuals and institutions that stand out in our society for their dedication to encouraging relationships between the culture of Spain, of the United Kingdom and of other English-speaking countries.

Magna Carta

Awards 2026

At Bennet & Rey Lawyers we believe that it is time for individuals and organisations in society to launch initiatives which bring the Spanish and British communities closer together.

We feel that this is a crucial moment to establish awards which remind these two communities of the ties that unite them. And there’s nothing better than honouring individuals and groups who excel within the sector of society in which they operate, and at the same time are instrumental in bridging the gap between these two cultures.

For these reasons, it is a pleasure to announce the first edition of the MAGNA CARTA Awards, a series awards FOR COOPERATION that recognise outstanding individuals, companies, and institutions that contribute to creating ties between Spain and the United Kingdom and English-speaking countries.

The Magna Carta Awards ceremony be held on April 23rd at the Banco Sabadell Auditorium in Madrid.

SOCIAL COMMITMENT AWARD – BRITISH EMBASSY – “Ambassador for a Day” programme, collected by His Excellency Sir Alex Ellis, British Ambassador

This award was granted in recognition of the British Embassy’s constant commitment not only to the protection and support of British citizens, but also to building real bridges between the United Kingdom and Spain.

In particular, the award recognises the educational programme for students known as “Ambassador for a Day” or “Embajadora por un día”, through which mainly female students aged between 16 and 18 in Spain are selected and given the opportunity to accompany the Ambassador in his work. The programme is organised by Ms Marta Gómez.

The award was granted for the British Embassy’s ability to open institutions to the public and encourage new involvement, one of the most valuable forms of social commitment. For this reason, the Committee granted the MAGNA CARTA SOCIAL COMMITMENT AWARD 2026 to the British Embassy in Madrid and to Sir Alex Ellis, His Excellency the British Ambassador.

The award was presented by Sir John Thompson, member of the Committee.

CULTURE AWARD – RTVE series ENA – Ms Kimberley Tell, star of the series ENA

in which she plays Her Majesty Queen Victoria Eugenia of Battenberg, the Spanish queen of British descent and wife of His Majesty King Alfonso XIII.

This award was granted in recognition of Ms Kimberley Tell’s masterful performance. She has given this historical figure a depth, sensitivity and truth that transcend the screen, enabling the Queen to stop being merely a historical character and become someone close and understandable.

For this reason, the Committee, in recognition of the series and of Ms Kimberley Tell’s excellent performance, granted the MAGNA CARTA CULTURE AWARD 2026 to the leading actress, Ms Kimberley Tell.

The award was presented by Mr John Ruescas, winner of the 2025 Magna Carta Arts Award, which he collected last year on behalf of the theatre group The Madrid Players.

BUSINESS AWARD – Secret Kingdoms (Mr David Price and Ms Beatriz Fernández, owners of the business)

Secret Kingdoms, a bookshop located in the centre of Madrid and run by David and Beatriz, is much more than a cultural space.

Through its business activity and the organisation of literary talks and gatherings, Secret Kingdoms is an example of how business can contribute to the cultural enrichment of society and strengthen the ties between the United Kingdom and Spain.

For this reason, the Committee, in recognition of its vocation to serve both communities, granted the MAGNA CARTA BUSINESS AWARD 2026 to SECRET KINGDOMS BOOKSHOP.

The award was presented by Mr José Manuel Candela Barreira, on behalf of Banco Sabadell, winner of the 2025 Magna Carta Business Award.

GASTRONOMY AWARD – Ms Nieves Barragán Mohacho

Ms Nieves, a Spanish chef based in London, has received her third Michelin star in London for her restaurant “Legado”.

Ms Nieves has played a decisive role in raising Spanish gastronomy to the highest level of excellence. As the first Spanish woman to obtain a Michelin star in London, her achievement represents a milestone in the recent history of Spanish cuisine internationally.

Through her restaurants, such as “Barrafina”, where she obtained her first Michelin star, and “Sabor”, where she obtained her second Michelin star, she has brought the richness and diversity of Spanish cuisine closer to the British public.

For all these reasons, the Committee granted the MAGNA CARTA GASTRONOMY AWARD 2026 to Ms Nieves Barragán Mohacho.

NATIONAL JOURNALISM AWARD – Mr Ignacio Peyró

As well as being a renowned journalist and writer, from 2017 to 2022 Mr Ignacio Peyró directed the Instituto Cervantes in London and now directs its office in Rome, playing an important role in strengthening the cultural and linguistic ties between Spain and the United Kingdom, not only through the written word but also through his work as a cultural manager.

This award is granted in particular for his work “Pompa y circunstancia. Diccionario sentimental de la cultura inglesa”. This book is, in itself, a brilliant exercise in cultural understanding.

It is a book that not only describes British culture, but interprets it, brings it closer and, in a certain sense, translates it emotionally for the Spanish-speaking reader.

And it is precisely there that its distinctive value lies: in its ability to look at the other side with curiosity, respect and intelligence.

For this reason, the Committee, in recognition of his journalistic work, his cultural management and his book “Pompa y circunstancia. Diccionario sentimental de la cultura inglesa”, granted the MAGNA CARTA NATIONAL JOURNALISM AWARD 2026 to Mr Ignacio Peyró.

The award was presented by Mr Miguel Ángel Idígoras Urrezola, winner of the 2025 Magna Carta National Journalism Award.

INTERNATIONAL JOURNALISM AWARD – Michael Reid

This award is granted to the journalist Mr Michael Reid, a recognised expert on Latin America and Spain, editor and columnist at “The Economist”, who has developed an exemplary career.

In particular, the award recognises his book “España”. In this book, Mr Michael Reid, with a critical yet deeply honest perspective, has analysed the evolution of the Spanish rule of law, carrying out detailed historical research, from its origins to the current challenges facing our democracy.

In a field in which it is easy to fall into simplifications or stereotypes, Mr Michael Reid achieves something unusual: he explains Spain without resorting to caricature and without idealising it, offering a serious and objective study of our country.

That balance between analysis and respect is, without doubt, one of the most sophisticated forms of journalism. For this reason, the Committee, in recognition of his work and of his book “España”, granted the MAGNA CARTA INTERNATIONAL JOURNALISM AWARD 2026 to Mr Michael Reid.

The award was presented by Ms Sarah Morris, winner of the 2025 Magna Carta International Journalism Award.

THE PETER PAUL HAUSCHILD AWARD FOR ACHIEVEMENT – Fundación CUDECA – Joan Hunt – collected by Ms Assumpta Eceiza Nebrada, Financial Director of Cudeca

Ms Joan Hunt, a British woman, arrived on the Costa del Sol with her husband, like so many British people who have chosen to live on our coasts. Her husband, however, became ill and died of cancer in Málaga in 1991. Joan Hunt decided to transform her immense grief into something greater: a collective project of dignity, humanity and support at the end of life.

That is how Cudeca was born: the first hospice, or comprehensive centre providing support and assistance to terminally ill patients and their families, in Spain.

Today, Cudeca supports thousands of patients and their families and is a benchmark in palliative care in Spain. Ms Joan Hunt is no longer with us, but her legacy remains alive today thanks to the commitment of her team.

For all these reasons, the Honorary Committee granted THE MAGNA CARTA PETER PAUL HAUSCHILD AWARD FOR ACHIEVEMENT 2026 to Fundación CUDECA.

The award was presented by Ms Pilar Teresa Romero, winner of the 2025 Magna Carta Peter Paul Hauschild Award for Achievement.
